The number of active wildfires burning across Saskatchewan fell over the weekend, as rain helped emergency crews make gains in firefighting efforts. There are 69 active wildfires burning — all north of Prince Albert National Park, according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA). Six are considered not contained and there’s one active evacuation order in place. The Buhl fire that burned its way into the northern portion of the national park was marked contained as of Monday and Parks Canada officials have turned management of the incident over to the SPSA. Late last week the SPSA lifted the provincial fire ban and the three largest fires in the province were brought under control. The Ditch, Shoe and Wolf fires quickly tore through a huge swath of the province throughout July. The Shoe fire, the season’s largest, burned well over half a million hectares before coming under control, according to the SPSA. In Denare Beach, the Wolf fire took out around 300 homes, many reduced to ash with only the brick chimneys still standing. The Saskatchewan NDP are in Denare Beach Monday meeting with wildfire victims. They’re calling for Premier Scott Moe to visit the community to provide closure and accountability with a town hall.
