A public inquest into the death of an inmate at the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre has been set for March 9 to 13. Gregory Bellegarde, 39, was found unresponsive in his cell on Dec. 21, 2022. Resuscitation efforts by staff and by EMS were unsuccessful and Bellegarde was pronounced dead. The inquest will take place at the Royal Hotel, 4025 Albert St. in Regina, with coroner William Davern to preside. According to The Coroners Act, the chief coronor must hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coronor says the person’s death was due to natural causes and not preventable. The purpose of an inquest is to establish details about the cause of death and to prevent similar deaths.
